Henri Jean Pierre Loubat was born in Gaillac, (Tarn), in the wine growing area of south-west France. After studying art at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in the nearby city of Toulouse he moved to Paris where he exhibited the first of many paintings at the Salon from 1878 onwards. Upon his return to Toulouse he took up the post of Professeur of art at the Beaux-Arts, a post which he was to hold for over 40 years.
