HENRI MARCHAL (b. 1878)
A view of Antibes from the sea
Signed Henri Marchal, Antibes 1929
Oil on canvas: 25½ x 32 in / 65 x 81 cm
Henri Marchal was born in Nancy and, after moving to Paris at the beginning of the 20th century to pursue his ambition of becoming an artist he became an admirer of and frequent visitor to the studio of Leon Bonnat (1834-1923) the celebrated portraitist. As director of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Bonnat was characterised as a liberal teacher who stressed simplicity in art above high academic finish, as well as overall effect rather than high detail. Marchal was to exhibit at the Paris Salon where in 1906 he was awarded a medal (third class), before gaining the Gold Medal there in 1926 and was awarded the Chevalier de la Legion d`honneur.
