Mid 19th century
The schooner Yankee Blade, 454 tons, approaching
New York on the Hudson River with the Cunard Line
paddle ship Delta on the left.
Painted between 1853-60
Oil on canvas: 19 x 30 in / 48 x 76 cm
The picture depicts the Hudson River paddle
steamers which were so distinctive and the
circular building in the centre is almost certainly
the Battery. The Yankee Blade, built 1850, 454 tons,
belonged to the New York based Merchant`s Line
and sailed regularly between New York and New
Orleans. The inbound paddle steamer on the extreme
left is almost certainly the Cunarder Delta, launched
in 1853 and sold in 1860, thus dating the picture
fairly conclusively to in between these years.
